The Borrego Ministers Association received a $35,000 grant from the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund to support its food coupon program in 2026. The grant was presented by Anna Abatzoglou, MBA, Executive Director of the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund, and David Garmon, president of the BVEF board, at the BVEF Grant Awards Luncheon on March 18, 2026. BMA Treasurer Karan K. Kyzer accepted the grant on behalf of the organization, with BMA Director, Fr. David Madsen in attendance. The funding supports a long-standing community effort to address food insecurity in Borrego Springs and builds on a program that distributed more than $140,000 in food coupons in 2025.

There is a wonderful community of organizations in Borrego, with different individual histories and boards, diverse networks of supporters, and distinct visions of their missions. Yet they are brought together by care for neighbors in need.

The Borrego Valley Endowment Fund (BVEF) is an acknowledged leader in supporting the well-being of Borregans, as its mission affirms. Its generosity has been directed toward healthcare, a major concern in Borrego Springs, including recent funding for improvements at the Borrego Clinic. BVEF has also supported other nonprofit groups working for the benefit of young people and education.

For almost 15 years, the faith communities of Borrego have been joined through the Borrego Ministers Association (BMA). Spearheaded by the Revs. Laura Brecht and James Brooking, clergy and lay members formed a network to assist neighbors in need. This includes temporary help with utilities, rent, transportation for medical appointments, auto repair, and loans for air conditioning units during extreme summer heat.

Given the high level of food insecurity in the Borrego Valley, the BMA began, around the time of the COVID lockdown, providing food coupons for Center Market and Desert Pantry. The owner of one of these stores has matched BMA coupon purchases, increasing the reach of the program. In 2025, the BMA purchased and distributed more than $140,000 in food coupons to Borrego residents in need.

Thus, the BMA board and members decided to apply to the BVEF for a significant grant to fund the food coupon programs and the grant was approved for $35,000 for 2026. The board of and the members of the BMA want to express our sincere gratitude for this generous grant. Alongside the five food banks that are open monthly, this grant goes a long way to easing food insecurity here.

Hi, I’m Chesney Hoagland-Fuchs, and I’m reaching out to you to support our Borrego Springs community. We need more health care workers here!

Several recent BSHS graduates are now in Nursing School.

But, one will not be able to continue without our help. We all complain about the economy, let's not let it derail a career and take a (future) nurse away from us.

According to Catholic tradition, her image appeared on Juan Diego’s cloak, becoming a lasting symbol of faith, Mexican identity, and the Catholic Church. Her feast day, celebrated annually on December 12, is one of the most significant religious observances in the Americas and draws millions of pilgrims each year to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

          WHO WE ARE

BCC caregivers assist with housekeeping and personal care, and receive training in First Aid, CPR, Safety and common medical conditions. Currently, 15 caregivers are available to serve our community.

          THE PROBLEM

Borrego Springs has a large percentage of older adults who are no longer able to independently manage housekeeping and personal care, and is also home to families with young adults who are seeking career opportunities.

          THE SOLUTION

For Borregans who need a little extra help to live independently at home, and our young families that need job opportunities, the Borrego Caregiver Corps (BCC) is a Win/Win

          THE BENEFITS

          ● Keep our community pillars here in Borrego for life: With support, no one needs to relocate to assisted living facilities far from Borrego Springs

          ● Healthcare: Building a workforce prepared to do the jobs needed to provide services here in Borrego Springs

          ● Resource expansion: Caregivers can continue the Healthcare Career Ladder using local Community College programs to become Certified Nursing/Medical assistant; LVN or RN

          ● Collaboration potential: Primary Care practices (DAP, STAT); Borrego USD; Borrego Ministers Association; Borrego Springs Community Resource Center; Rotary; Soroptimists

Dr. George Abrams, Shirley Vialpando, and Joyce Merrick, our secretary and interim treasurer. Andrea McKenna is our gifted communications person. We check in with each other every Tuesday, pray for our sisters and brothers in need, go through the pastoral needs submitted since the last meeting, and review our upcoming events and services.

A Joyful October Tradition in Borrego Springs

Each October, the Borrego Ministers Association (BMA) invites the community to gather at Christmas Circle for the annual Blessing of the Animals. This heartfelt event honors the bond between people and their beloved animals, inspired by the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.

Pets of all kinds—dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and more—receive individual blessings during this inclusive outdoor gathering. It’s a joyful time for reflection, connection, and gratitude for the role animals play in our lives.

The BMA, a coalition of local churches and community leaders, hosts this event as part of its mission to support spiritual well-being and unity in Borrego Springs. Whether you're a local or just visiting, all are welcome to take part in this meaningful celebration.

Virginia “Jinny” Perrin has received the 2025 Lay Member Recognition Award from the South District of the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, which includes San Diego, Imperial, and parts of Riverside and Orange counties. This Lay Member honor recognizes individuals who serve with consistent dedication in both their congregations and communities.

Jinny’s love of music began early. Both of her parents were music educators and church music leaders, and she held her first choir director position while still in college—directing a children’s choir. Over the decades, she has contributed in countless ways to the spiritual and cultural life of Borrego Springs. Among her many ongoing commitments, she also performs with the Flotilla of Flutes, sharing her talents beyond Community UMC and supporting music throughout the community.

Virginia “Jinny” Perrin arrived in Borrego Springs August 1981, the new K-12 music teacher in our schools and began attending Community UMC. She stepped up to become the church musician in January 1984, following the untimely passing of our pastor, Norman Wright, who was also the pianist, organist, and choir director. Jinny immediately provided piano and choir music for Sunday worship and began taking organ lessons. After 4 lessons, the organ teacher suddenly passed. Jinny continued to study independently and became our very competent organist. During her 42 years serving as Music Director of Community UMC and working with the various pastors, she has enriched and enhanced our worship experiences and encouraged many others in contributing to ministry through music. She has worked with the children/youth programs over the years, provided music at additional holiday worships, weddings, and life celebrations. The music ministry Jinny provides, has drawn many people to worship and participate at Community.

Jinny is also active in the organization and operation of Community UMC. She serves as Chair of the Simple Board of Governance. She serves and advises the Trustees and continues to be active in caring for church property. If there is something that needs attention, Jinny is there to assist.

BVEF Makes Borrego Stronger, One Gift at a Time

The Borrego Ministers’ Association (BMA) has received a generous $10,000 grant from the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund (BVEF), a nonprofit dedicated to improving the health, well-being, and sustainability of the Borrego Valley and its residents.

This grant will directly fund the BMA’s food coupon program, a practical support system for individuals and families facing hardship in Borrego Springs. These coupons are redeemable at local grocery stores—The Center Market and The Desert Pantry—ensuring that aid helps residents meet basic needs while supporting small, local businesses.

The Borrego Ministers Association is a nonprofit coalition of local faith leaders and community members that quietly provides year-round assistance to residents facing crises. Their programs include emergency support for rent, utilities, transportation, food assistance, coordination of local charitable resources, and interfaith services that strengthen community connections.

“In the hot summer, families really scramble to make ends meet, especially when they are let go from jobs in hospitality which slows down considerably,” said BMA Chair Michael Plekon. “The BMA often can help them rearrange dollars so that rent and utilities don’t put food and medication in jeopardy. Food coupons and the food bank can go a long way in helping.”

The BMA is often called upon when no other local option exists—ensuring that help reaches those in need swiftly, respectfully, and without red tape.

The Borrego Valley Endowment Fund’s mission is closely aligned with the BMA’s work. Originally focused on ensuring quality healthcare in Borrego Springs, BVEF now also supports initiatives in community development and environmental protection. Their funding priorities include senior care, youth opportunities, skills training, housing, and food security—essential areas for a rural, unincorporated community like Borrego Springs.

This grant for food support is part of BVEF’s larger commitment to promoting practical, local solutions that improve residents’ quality of life.

The BMA extends its sincere thanks to the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund for this generous grant. Special appreciation goes to BVEF’s Jim Dion for helping facilitate the partnership.

Each year on Ash Wednesday, the Borrego Ministers Association (BMA) brings the Ashes-to-Go tradition to Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs. Residents and visitors are invited to receive ashes as a symbol of repentance, humility, and hope at the start of the Lenten season.

This ecumenical gathering offers a meaningful moment of reflection and connection for all—regardless of religious affiliation. Rooted in ancient Christian tradition, Ashes-to-Go serves as a public invitation to slow down, reflect, and prepare for renewal during Lent.

The Borrego Ministers Association unites local churches and community leaders in their mission to support spiritual growth and build a stronger, more compassionate Borrego Springs. Events like this ensure that important traditions remain accessible to everyone.

A Community Partnership Supporting Families in Need

The Borrego Ministers Association (BMA) grocery voucher program offers vital support to local families during times of need. This ongoing effort is made possible through generous, long-term partnerships with Borrego Springs’ small businesses.

For many years, Mitzi Poulin of Center Market has matched BMA’s monthly voucher purchases with in-kind donations—making her our largest individual contributor. In 2023 alone, her donated vouchers exceeded $30,000 in value.

The Desert Pantry has also supported the program by offering discounted vouchers and serving as a reliable partner to the local food bank since its inception.

Supporting these small businesses is essential. Unlike large chains, our local markets face high energy and labor costs and don’t benefit from volume discounts. By shopping locally, you help keep essential services available—and ensure these stores can continue supporting Borrego Springs nonprofits like the BMA.

The voucher program was created by BMA founder Mike Himmerich, expanded by Shirley Vialpando, and is now overseen by Diana Fox, who distributes vouchers each Wednesday afternoon at the Community Resource Center.

This program is one example of how BMA and local businesses work together to care for the Borrego community—neighbors helping neighbors, year after year.

Borrego Ministers Association Beginnings: Interview with Rev. Laura Brecht

Reflecting on a Legacy: An Interview with Rev. Laura Brecht as She Bids Farewell to St. Barnabas

After twelve years of dedicated service, Rev. Laura Brecht is preparing to leave St. Barnabas, a community she has profoundly influenced through her innovative and compassionate leadership. As she packs up her home, which remains remarkably orderly amidst the chaos of moving, Rev. Laura reflects on her time at St. Barnabas and the unique ways she has engaged with the community of Borrego Springs.

Rev. Laura’s approach to ministry has been anything but conventional. From participating in local parades to helping those in immediate need, like offering a ride to a hitchhiker or aiding the sick, she has woven the spirit of service into everyday interactions. These acts of kindness often led community members back to St. Barnabas, enriching the church with new faces and stories.

Perhaps her most significant contribution is the founding of the Borrego Ministers Association (BMA), which she established shortly after her arrival with fellow minister Jim Brooking. The BMA has become a cornerstone of community support in Borrego Springs, coordinating efforts among local churches to provide not just spiritual but practical aid to residents. Under Rev. Laura’s leadership, the association has seen remarkable growth in both scope and impact, particularly evident in the surge of community donations during the COVID pandemic, totaling over $300,000.

The BMA’s success is a testament to Rev. Laura’s philosophy that the church should serve as a hub of community life. St. Barnabas, under her guidance, has initiated numerous programs that extend beyond traditional worship services. These include a youth golf program, which not only introduced local children to the sport but also integrated other community services like swimming and nutritional support during the summer.

In her interview, Rev. Laura shared her belief in “servant leadership,” a model she has embodied by empowering congregation members to take active roles in community service. This approach has allowed the church to flourish as a dynamic and inclusive community center, not confined by the walls of the building but extended into the homes and lives of Borrego Springs’ residents.

As St. Barnabas prepares for a transition to new leadership, Rev. Laura leaves behind a legacy of growth, community engagement, and spiritual enrichment. Her final message to the congregation and future leaders is one of encouragement: to continue the work with joy, embrace the flow of the community’s spirit, and support each other’s passions as expressions of divine love.

Rev. Laura’s influence will undoubtedly continue to resonate within St. Barnabas and the broader Borrego Springs community. Her departure marks the end of a fruitful chapter but also the beginning of a new era, ripe with opportunities for growth and continued service under new stewardship.
